Cases Of Sexual Abuse Of Children By Relatives Remain High

Cases of sexual abuse of children by relatives remain high with the police receiving an average of five new cases a day.

The latest case is of a 37-year-old Harare who is facing rape charges after he allegedly raped his 17-year-old niece twice.

He allegedly took advantage of his sister’s absence and raped the girl.

The court heard that he threatened the girl with death.

The teen told her mother what had happened during her absence and they filed a police report leading to his arrest.

Observers say rapists take advantage of the trust that their victims have in them and abuse them.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old Obedience Chimunhu, who allegedly lured a 12-year-old girl who was on her way back from school into a mountain and raped her once also appeared in court answering to rape charges.

In another case, 47-year-old Mudzapwa Sibanda is also facing rape and robbery charges after he allegedly robbed a 22-year-old woman before raping her.

The court heard that the woman was gang-raped by the accused and his accomplices who are still at large.

All the accused persons were remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
