Zim Independent Apologises For 'Govt Paid US$200K For Finance Minister's Hotel Stay' Article

The Zimbabwe Independent has apologised to Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube for last week’s article which claimed that he stayed for 2 years at Meikles and that government paid US$200 000 for his stay.

The story which was shared and aggregated by several publications claimed the government allegedly spent over US$200 000 on Ncube’s accommodation after his two-year stay at Miekles Hotel where an executive room costs US$200 per night.

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development dismissed the reports as false and misleading.

The ministry also requested that the publication, “in your next edition, retract and apologise for this highly misleading report and that your retraction and apology receive the same prominence that you accorded to the report.”

The publication has since issued a statement titled “As a matter of fact…” Reads the statement:

As a matter of fact …

IN our edition of September 24, 2021, we published on our front page a story headlined Govt lavishes Ncube with US$200 000 hotel stay.

We have since learnt that our sources were out to mislead us. We have since established that Finance minister Mthuli Ncube (pictured) did not stay at the Meikles Hotel for anywhere near the purported two years and the Government of Zimbabwe did not fork out US$200 000 to pay for the stay.

We apologise most sincerely to the minister for the embarrassment the story caused him. In future, we will be more circumspect in dealing with our sources of information.

The Zimbabwe Independent, despite this embarrassment, will continue to be the best source in the country for fact-checked news. We are firmly committed to ethical, fair and accurate journalism.

We also unreservedly apologise for any inconvenience caused. – Editor.
