Jonathan Moyo Urges MDC Alliance To Protect "CCC As A Name"

Exiled former Cabinet Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has urged the MDC-Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa to take legal steps in protecting their party name.

Moyo who fled from the country in 2017 when the late former president Robert Mugabe was ousted from power posted on Twitter amid a wrangle between MDC Alliance and rival MDC-T led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora over the name. He said:

If the MDC-A has not yet taken the necessary legal steps to protect “Citizen Convergence for Change (CCC)”, as a name or whatever, they must run to do so after reading this!

MDC Alliance Secretary-General, Chalton Hwende, responded suggesting that the main issue to be addressed was the independence of the judiciary.

There have been reports that, like many other institutions, the judiciary had been captured by the executive. Said Hwende:

The biggest problem which needs to be addressed is the judiciary capture. ED has pliant judges that are being used to disregard legal steps which will ordinarily protect a political party. I will give an example of PDP a constitution and registered patents could not stop recalls

Moyo responded suggesting that Mwonzora was President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tool to weaken the opposition. He said:

The constituents elements of the MDC-A, such as the PDP, were specifically targeted by the system upfront through its @DMwonzora strategy to destroy the MDC-A; as it was constituted for the 2018 elections. In 2023, Mnangagwa does not want to again face the MDC-A he faced in 2018!

MDC-T has, since the 2020 Supreme Court ruling on the MDC leadership crisis which started with the demise of founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018, been recalling MDC Alliance legislators and councillors for supporting Chamisa.
