Exiled former Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Professor Jonathan Moyo has said he has been informed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is way older than he claims.
Pindula News could not verify the allegations.
Moyo who is also a former minister of Higher and Tertiary Education said he was told by anonymous sources that Mnangagwa was born in 1942 and not 1946 as he claims. He said:
HOW OLD IS EMMERSON MNANGAGWA? Some who were with him in Zambia, and were born in Sept 1938, say they used to have joint birthday parties with him. In the 1980s/90s, press reports said he was born in Sept 1942. Now he says he was born in 1946. Truth is he’s turning 83 next month!
Moyo is one of the alleged kingpins of the defunct G40 cabal, a ZANU PF faction, who openly and staunchly opposed the Lacoste faction, led by then vice president Mnangagwa.
He skipped the country’s borders when the military, then under the leadership of now vice president Constantino Chiwenga removed then-president Robert Mugabe from power.
Some analysts say his resentment of Mnangagwa was clouding his reasoning while others are saying he was just frank.
The Zimbabwean constitution of 2013 stipulates, among other qualifications, that anyone who has attained the age of forty years, and it does not specify the maximum age limit.
Age is believed to be one of the factors that affect one’s ability to execute duties and responsibilities.
The constitution states that a president can be removed from office if he or she is unable to “perform the functions of the office because of physical or mental incapacity.”
The issue of age is said to have played a big role in the demise of Mugabe as he made a chain of miscellaneous blunders towards the end of his political career.
Zimbabwe goes to the polls in 2023 and Mnangagwa aims to retain power to at least 2030.
