Rural Teachers Propose Measures To Save Zimbabwe's Education

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has proposed measures that can be adopted by the government to implement different remote learning strategies in all districts during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during an online meeting with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Friday, ARTUZ said that there was a need for the decentralisation of education management so that each district implement their own suitable strategy for remote learning. Said ARTUZ:

The crisis in our education sector emanates from the centralisation of education management.

For context-based remote learning to work, communities should be given latitude to study their context, develop a contextual remote learning strategy and implement it.

ARTUZ proposes that each district be given the mandate to produce a remote learning strategy that suits available resources.

A district will have to produce a strategy that can be implemented with available resources.

The District Schools Inspectors should have planning meetings with school heads and produce working strategies for remote learning for schools in their districts.

Schools are currently closed and the government has ordered school administrators to prepare for the commencement of classes even though the date has not yet been announced.
