I Expected Mugabe Ministers To Apologise - MDC Activist

United States-based MDC Alliance activist, Freeman Chari has said he expected apologies from ministers in the cabinet of the late former president Robert Gabriel Mugabe for the “wrongs” during their tenure of office but “none” of them apologised.

Mugabe presided over a deepening economic crisis in Zimbabwe, where the majority lived in abject poverty.

The gradual collapse of the economy is attributed to corruption and poor policies. The government blamed sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and their allies at the turn of the millennium for alleged human rights abuses.

Chari said he thought the ministers in the Mugabe regime should have apologised for their contribution to the demise of the economy. He said:

I have been waiting for these former Mugabe ministers to just sincerely say… “I am sorry for the things I did or enabled under my watch. I will never do it again”. Nop, they are all clean!

I will keep reminding myself and others that we might have fallen on the same side but we probably do not have much in common. They had disdain for us, they were willing to exterminate us. Have we become so attractive to be worth of camaraderie or we are just convenient…?

Of all the ministers who were appointed by Mugabe between 1980 and 2017, Dr Nkosana Moyo is the only one who resigned, in 2001, citing differences between him and Mugabe.

Most, if not all, of the ministers during the Mugabe era were accused of engaging in underhand dealings at the expense of national development.

Some analysts argue that there is n difference between Mugabe’s cabinets and that of his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa while some say the latter is worse as far as corruption is concerned.

They say Mnangagwa has only paid lip service to fight corruption adding that his anti-corruption institutions – the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and the Special Anti-Corruption Unit – are toothless.
