Mnangagwa Postpones Groundbreaking Ceremony For US$1 Billion Chinese Mine

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has postponed the groundbreaking ceremony for the US$1 billion Tsingshan Holdings iron ore mine. The ceremony was due to take place on 27 July 2021.

Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs Minister Apolonia Munzveregi confirmed the postponement of the event to Masvingo Mirror.

She said the event was supposed to take place at Manhize, which is at the border of three provinces namely Mashonaland East, Midlands and Mashonaland West.

Munzverengi said the ceremony was postponed because of logistical issues although she could not shed light on it.

Masvingo Mirror reported sources as saying the much-hyped ceremony was cancelled because of a misunderstanding between the mine and villagers who want the mine to also bring its offices into Mashonaland East for structural development.

Two traditional ritual ceremonies to appease local spirit mediums over the projects were conducted in the Midlands and in Mashonaland East respectively in the last few weeks.

Villagers in Chikomba (Mashonaland East), are opposed to the extraction of minerals in their province while infrastructure including mining plants will be built in the Midlands Province which is Mnangagwa’s home area.
