Chegutu Town Clerk Dies Of COVID-19

Chegutu Town clerk Alex Mandigo has succumbed to COVID-19 complications. He was 57.

Mandigo, who was on suspension since 9 March this year, died on Thursday at a Harare hospital after battling the respiratory illness.

Chegutu Municipality public relations officer, Brian Nkiwane confirmed Mandigo’s death. He said:

It is with a heavy heart to announce the untimely death of our town clerk, Mr Alex Mandigo.

The late town clerk was suspended on full salary and benefits to pave way for investigations over a slew of allegations, including corruption.

Mandigo’s death comes a week after Chegutu Municipality lost another senior official, deputy mayor Mathius Shumba (MDC Alliance) due to an undisclosed ailment.

Chegutu town, located in Mashonaland West Province and along the highway connecting Harare with Bulawayo, has become a COVID-19 hotspot.

Reports indicate that vendors defying set prevention and containment measures were spawning new infections and fatalities in the farming town.
