South Africa Unrest: Death Toll Has Risen To 337

The death toll from the unrest that followed the jailing of former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has risen from 276, announced on Wednesday, to 337.

Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said that more people had died from injuries sustained during the violence while over 200 were murders.

Minister Ntshavheni said that 213 murder cases were being investigated.

Thousands of businesses were looted in the riots last week that mainly affected the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

It was a level of violence unprecedented in post-apartheid South Africa.

Some individuals, including Indians, resorted to vigilantism and went after, tortured and killed some people who had allegedly torched their trucks during the violent protests.

Most of the protesters have no jobs in South Africa.

The protests were triggered by the arrest and incarceration of Zuma on 8 July over his refusal to appear before the Zondo Commission of Enquiry that is investigating him over corruption he allegedly committed when he was still president.

Zuma was ousted in 2018 by his party, ANC following a spate of graft accusations.

He was replaced by the incumbent, Cyril Ramaphosa.
