Zimbabwe Records Over 100 COVID-19 Deaths in 24 Hours

Zimbabwe recorded 102 deaths resulting from coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, the first time the country has hit three digits since the onset of the third wave.

According to the Ministry of Health and Childcare COVID-19 Situation Report, the country recorded 102 deaths on 16 July 2021.

While the seven-day average for new cases since 4 July has fallen, signalling that Zimbabwe has reached the peak of the COVID-19 third wave, deaths are expected to remain high for the next few weeks.

Announcing the extension of the enhanced level 4 lockdown measures early this week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said 80% of new coronavirus infections are attributed to the Delta variant, first detected in India.

Meanwhile, 1 096 002 people have received the first COVID-19 vaccine, while 635 738 have received the two jabs.
