Highly Connected White Farmer Encroaches Into Others' Farms

A white farmer in Marondera is reportedly encroaching into other farmers’ territories boasting that nothing will happen to him as he is highly connected.

Zim Morning Post reports that Rodney James Cormack has hired excavators and bulldozers and destroyed demarcations of his neighbours’ legitimate farms.

Cormack reportedly argued that other farmers had been allocated big land compared to his. Speaking to Zim Morning Post, a 45-year-old farmer identified as Liveson Manjengwa said:

Cormack is arrogant and he boasts that he has a connection with the resident minister.

This morning my farm manager called me and advised that “Cormac was encroaching into our land.

I asked him on what basis was he doing that when I have an offer letter from the Ministry of Lands and I can show you the copy.

But he insisted that he is well connected.

This is wrong, we are trying to farm and we invested a lot of money in this farm since I was allocated in 2017.

The farmers called upon the government to intervene saying Cormack was reversing the gains of the land reform programme.

The development is worrying neighbouring farmers who are no longer sure if their land was secure.

Others want the government to allocate him land elsewhere.

The land issue is very sensitive in Zimbabwe.

Since attaining independence in 1980, Zimbabwe embarked on a phased land reform programme that saw several Africans being resettled on land previously owned by white farmers.
