The Mayor of Johannesburg councillor (Cllr) Geoff Makhubo has succumbed to COVID-19 complications.
Makhubo was admitted to the hospital on 3 July after testing positive for the novel virus in late June.
The City of Johannesburg confirmed the passing of the mayor this Friday. Cllr Eunice Mgcina acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC)for Health and Social Development said:

_It is my sad duty to confirm that the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg,Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo has indeed succumbed to Covid-19._
_Cllr Makhubo passed on this morning, July 9, 2021, after being in hospital for a while. We had hoped that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods._
_Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother and the rest of his family, friends and comrades._
_The family has requested to be afforded privacy and space as they process the untimely passing of one of their own. Mourners are discouraged from gathering at the home of the Executive Mayor._
Makhubo was elected mayor in 2019.
Johannesburg is South Africa’s biggest city and capital of Gauteng province which is bearing the impact of the COVID-19 third wave.
