Zimbabwe National Army Commander Edzai Chimonyo Has Died.

The Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army General Edzai Chimonyo has died.

He succumbed to cancer early this morning, Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (Presidential spokesman) George Charamba confirmed in a tweet. Reads the tweet:

_Devastated to announce the passing on of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well freedom fighter, commander and ambassador._

Chimonyo was last year flown to India for treatment.

He assumed his position on the 18th of December 2017 when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He took over from General Philip Valerio Sibanda, who was promoted to be the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (CDF)
