Police Arrest 'Dangerous' Armed Robbers After A Series Of Gunfights In Harare

Statement by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on the arrest of armed robbers after a series of shootouts in Harare and the death of one suspect.

ARREST OF DANGEROUS AND NOTORIOUS ARMED ROBBERS AFTER A SERIES OF SHOOTOUTS IN HARARE AND DEATH OF ONE SUSPECT

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of dangerous and notorious seven [07] armed robbers and the death of one robber after a series of shootouts with Police detectives in Harare on 03 July 2021.

Police received information that one robbery gang leader, Godfrey JOSI [41], was in Damafalls. A crack team raided the suspect who bolted out of a room armed with a revolver.

He scuffled with the police officers and was shot on the left leg. A.30 Rose revolver loaded with two [02] live rounds, three [03] super power explosive dynamites and four [04] fuse cables were recovered from the suspect’s bedroom.

He then revealed his accomplices as Richard MUTANGA [40] Zvidozvashe ZUDA [35], Peter MUSHIPE [40], Valentine MUTASA [30], Benjamin Craig MUSASA [39] [deceased] and Decide RICE
Richard MUTANGA was raided in Unit ‘O’, Seke, Chitungwiza leading to the recovery of a gateway vehicle, Honda CVR registration number AFI 8046.

Zvidozvashe ZUDA was arrested at Kuwadzana Roundabout with a Retan Air Pistol, 5 x 9mm and 6 x 7.60mm live rounds of ammunition being recovered.

Police detectives followed Peter MUSHIPE in Stoneridge area, Harare, where the suspect tried to run away whilst armed with a 12 Bore Shotgun loaded with one [01] live round.

He was subsequently shot on the right leg and 8 x 12 bore live rounds of ammunition were recovered from his pockets.

The fifth suspect, Valentine MUTASA had a confrontation with police officers at Glenwood Park, Epworth and was shot on the left hip leading to the recovery of a 303 Rifle with a magazine of three [03] rounds of ammunition.

The leader of the second gang, Decide RICE, was lured to Harare Drive, Greendale, Harare. He came in the company of another suspect, Benjamin MUSASA and hid in a maize field at the corner of Latima Road and Harare Drive.

The two suspects suddenly fired some shots towards the police detectives. During the exchange of fire, Benjamin MUSASA was shot and arrested while the ring leader, Decide RICE, escaped. A.38 revolver with erased serial numbers was recovered.

The injured suspects were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital where Benjamin MUSASA died on admission.

The Police has also arrested Juliet GAVAZA [37] after investigations revealed that she is married to suspect, Godfrey JOSI, and had a house, Stand number 17704 Rockview, Zengeza 5, Chitungwiza bought and registered in her name from the proceeds of the armed robbery cases committed in and outside Harare.

She is facing charges of Contravening Section 8 of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act Chapter 9:24. The Police have secured all the transactional documents related to this house.

The suspects are clearing seven [07] armed robbery cases which include the one at Gateway High School on 28 March 2021 where US$250 000-00 cash was stolen, the robbery in Muzari Suburb, Chinhoyi on 12 January 2021 where US$60 000-00 was taken, another robbery case at UZ Farm Compound on 10 May 2021 where US$20 000-00 was stolen and recent robbery which occurred on 29 June 2021 when the suspects took US$19 80000 from a Beatrice farmer who had supplied potatoes to a local company in Harare and Mbare Musika.

The ZRP has also established that Godfrey JOSI, Peter MUSHIPE, Valentine MUTASA and Benjamin Craig MUSASA [deceased] have several cases of armed robbery and warrants of arrest which are pending before the courts.

Valentine MUTASA has a pending murder case in Nembudziya, Gokwe and an armed robbery case in Kadoma.

The Police are still pursuing more inquiries in order to clear all the cases in which the suspects were implicated.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates its position and that of His Excellency President E.D MNANGAGWA that armed robbers will be dealt with decisively.

The Police urge the public to continue supplying information on all robbers so that the law may take its course.
