Italy Beat Austria To Reach Euro Quarter-Finals

Italy beat Austria 2-1 in extra time on Saturday to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2020 underway in 11 countries on the continent.

They will now play either Belgium or Portugal.

Just five minutes into the extra time, Chiesa broke the deadlock as he volleyed in from a tight angle and the other substitute Pessina added a second on the stroke of half-time.

Austria kept fighting and pulled one back with Kalajdzic’s header from a corner, but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Immobile had hit the post in the first half while Arnautovic had a goal ruled out in the second.

Italy have won four consecutive games at the European Championship for the second time, previously doing so in EURO 2000 when they ended up as losing finalists.

They have set their new record of 12 consecutive wins, overtaking the streak of 11, which was also under Roberto Mancini, in 2019.

Italy have also gone for 31 games unbeaten.

Austria have lost all five of their meetings with Italy in major international tournaments (World Cup and EUROs), netting just two goals in these matches.

This was Italy’s eighth game at the European Championship to go to extra time, more than any other side in the history of the competition. Their two goals tonight were their first-ever goals in the additional 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Denmark advance to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 with a 4-0 hammering of Wales at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Kasper Dolberg fired the Danes ahead in the first half before notching a second following a mistake by Neco Williams after the restart.

Joakim Maehle put the game beyond doubt with a composed finish and Martin Braithwaite then added agony to Gareth Bale’s team with a fourth in stoppage time.

Harry Wilson was dismissed for the Dragons late on to cap a miserable night for Robert Page’s men.
