Zimbabwe’s Postmaster-General Elected PAPU secretary general

Zimbabwe Post (Zimpost) Postmaster-General Sifundo Chief Moyo was voted secretary-general for the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), becoming the first person in the SADC to clinch the position.

Since its formation 41 years ago, no Southern African country had ever assumed PAPU’s top post.

Moyo landed the post by acclamation during the 10th Ordinary Session of PAPU held in Victoria Falls.

The elections were held after midnight following more than seven hours of fierce debate as PAPU member states disagreed on the eligibility of some countries and candidates as well as voting criteria.

The candidate from Mali pulled out on Tuesday leaving Moyo to contest Sameh Solaiman of Egypt, who was however disqualified on the 11th hour as he did not meet requirements.

The candidate from Mali was resisted following a recent coup while a candidate from Morocco also faced challenges after it emerged that his country was in arrears in terms of its African Union obligations.

Moyo takes over from Mr Gjibrine Younnous and will be at the helm for the next four years.

Jessica Ssengooba from Postal Uganda was voted deputy secretary-general.

She was chosen in line with the principle of geographical representation and gender balance.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened by conference yesterday.
