Police Warn Churches Against Ignoring COVID-19 Guidelines

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned churches that are holding services and night vigils in defiance of the COVID-19 regulations stipulated by the government.

Reports indicate that members of the Apostolic sects have been holding services as usual in some parts of Harare with no social distancing in place in spite of a Government ban on public gatherings.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said those defying COVID-19 regulations risked being arrested. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

The law is very clear; the Government has said church services are banned until further notice.

Anyone who is not complying with the Government’s COVID-19 regulations especially churches will be taken to account.

He also said people should not have to forced to observe COVID-19 guidelines but should do so for their own safety. Added Asst Comm Nyathi:

People should not wait for the police to force them to wear face masks. People should not wait for the Police to force them to comply with COVID-19 regulations.

They must do it for their own safety, community and family members.

On 14 June, the government tightened COVID-19 regulations as new coronavirus cases started to rise alarmingly.

However, there has been laxity in compliance especially in the high-density areas of Harare as people take a business as usual approach.
