Father Ribeiro To Be Buried At The National Heroes Acre

The late Roman Catholic cleric, Father Emmanuel Ribeiro, will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Monday 21 June 2021.

Fr Ribeiro died at St Anne’s Hospital in Harare on Thursday morning after a short illness. He was 86.

Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri on Friday informed the Ribeiro, Mashonganyika and Makaka families that the government and the ruling ZANU PF had conferred national hero status on the late cleric.

During a meeting this Saturday between the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Burials of National Heroes, representatives from the family of the late Fr Ribeiro and the Roman Catholic Church, it was agreed burial will take at the National Heroes Acre.

The decision was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage in a statement. Pindula News published the statement below:

Today, the 19th of June 2021, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Burials of National Heroes, sat for a meeting with representatives from the family of the late National Hero, Father Emmanuel Ribeiro and the Roman Catholic Church.

This follows yesterday’s conferment of National Hero Status on the late Father Emmanuel Ribeiro. Following consultations with the family and the Church, it was agreed that the burial of the late national hero Father Emmanuel Ribeiro be held at the National Heroes Acre on Monday 21 June 2021.

The following arrangements have been put in place ahead of the burial on Monday 21 June 2021:

  • Tomorrow, 20 June 2021, the body leaves Doves Funeral Parlour at 1400 hrs for a mass at the St Mary’s Queen of Peace Parish, in Old Highfield. After the mass, the body will be taken back to Doves Funeral Services.
  • On the day of burial, Monday 21 June 2021, the body will be taken to Old Highfield for a mass. The cortege will then leave Old Highfield at 0955 hrs for the national shrine.
  • The official programme will then be followed thereafter.
