A public health expert, Itai Rusike, has commended the government for the latest new coronavirus containment measures announced on Saturday.

We commend the government of Zimbabwe for being proactive in taking the necessary covid-19 preventive measures in order to prevent a looming disaster from the 3rd wave.

Yes, some people may view the measures as draconian but they are necessary and important in saving lives hence we want to encourage the general public to embrace these measures.

We also want to urge the general public to continue religiously observing the who recommended guidelines.

This is a welcome move from the government as people had relaxed and this has resulted in a surge in numbers hence these new measures are welcome.

Zimbabwe’s COVID-19 cases have been surging in the past week with 596 new cases and 26 deaths recorded in the last seven days.

From the 5th to the 11th of June 2021, an average of 78 cases was reported per day compared to an average of 36 cases per day in the previous week.

This prompted the Minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to announce a soft lockdown that commences on Monday, 14 June 2021.

The new measures include the banning of all gatherings which include weddings, church, music festivals and sporting activities.

Funerals are now limited to thirty people.
