Nine (9) occupants of an Iveco vehicle were on Friday robbed of over 25 000 rands by four armed robbers along the Dumba-Lutumba road in Beitbridge.
According to police, the group had smuggled various goods into the country from South Africa through an illegal entry point.
The robbers barricaded the road with stones to block the vehicle and then robbed the occupants of the vehicle of R25 635, US$137 and ZWL$500.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement:
The ZRP reiterates that members of the public must use designated points when entering or exiting the country.
Police are investigating a robbery case that occurred along the Dumba-Lutumba Rd, Beitbridge on 14/05/21, where 9 people who had smuggled various goods into the country through an undesignated point of entry lost cash and property worthy ZAR25 635, US137 and ZWL500 to armed robbers.
The four unknown suspects, who were armed with an unidentified pistol, barricaded the road with stones and pounced on the complainants who were travelling in an Iveco vehicle laden with various smuggled goods.
Asst Comm Nyathi said the complainants were referred to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) for duty assessment on the smuggled goods.
