Zimbabwe To Rename More Streets And Buildings To Create A Sense Of National Pride
Zimbabwe is set to rename more streets and buildings to create a sense of national pride, a senior official from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has said.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, Mr Zvinechimwe Churu has instructed District Development Coordinators to submit new names for buildings, schools and any amenities that still have pre-independence names. Churu said the name changes are meant to create a sense of national pride.
In November 2019, Cabinet approved the renaming of street names, places and Government buildings in Zimbabwe. In Harare, some of the renamed streets include Speke Avenue to Agostinho Neto Avenue, Angwa Street to Sir Seretse Khama Street, Third Street to Patrice Lumumba Street.
In Bulawayo, Sixth Avenue up to Sixth Avenue extension was renamed Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Way, Ninth Avenue was renamed Simon Muzenda Avenue and 12th Avenue was renamed Joseph Msika Avenue.
Churu has instructed District Development Coordinators to submit 10 possible name changes in their districts that will replace colonial or anglicized names. The communication reads:

The Cabinet Committee on Names (Alteration) would like to re-invigorate the changing of names in line with National Development Strategy 1 concepts of inclusivity and national heritage. It is believed replacing colonial or anglicized names will create a sense of national pride. I now require each district development coordinator to submit at least ten proposed name changes per district. The areas to be covered by the proposals should include road and street names, schools, colleges and training centres, health facilities, buildings, natural features and local place names.
The renaming of streets has previously caused pandemonium between the central government and local government authorities who accused the former of encroaching into their jurisdiction.
Observers, however, said there should be competition in improving service delivery as naming a non-existent road is useless.
A number of roads in Zimbabwe have been declared death traps due to their poor state.
