Mozambique Conflict: Why Should Zimbabwe Deploy Troops Alone? - Charamba

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba has dismissed reports that claim Zimbabwe has deployed its troops to address the conflict in Mozambique.

Charamba said Zimbabwe will only deploy troops as part of a Southern African Development Committee (SADC) force.

Speaking to the media, Charamba said:

It (any intervention) must be a Sadc initiative. Why should Zimbabwe deploy alone? It needs all Sadc countries like what (Botswana) President Mokgweetsi Masisi told you (the media).

He is the chairman of the organ on politics, defence and security cooperation. It’s a regional question and it will require a regional response. There is no time for single heroism. We work as a region.

Mokgweetsi recently told the media that SADC will respond to the insurgency to ensure that Mozambique’s sovereignty is not assaulted.

Observers have however criticised the sluggish SADC amid reports that hundreds of people have since died while thousands were forced to leave their homes since the insurgence erupted in the Northern part of Mozambique in 2017.

Zimbabwe which has much to lose if the conflict worsens has since expressed its readiness to intervene but only as part of a SADC force.

Meanwhile, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) which comprises the armed forces of South Africa has been in Mozambique on a mission to retrieve South African nationals.

A Zimbabwean mercenary hired to assist Mozambique to fight the militants recently told CNN that the insurgents had captured the strategic town of Palma which is located near a USD60 billion oil project.
