Israella Bushiri Funeral: Malawian President And VP Paid For Expenses Claims Bushiri's Spokesman

Shepherd Bushiri’s spokesperson has claimed that Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Saulos Chilima paid part of the expenses for Israella Bushiri’s funeral.

Bushiri’s spokesperson Ephraim Nyondo confirmed to News24 that Chakwera and Chilima paid part of the funeral expenses for Israella’s funeral. Information released by Nyondo alleges that Chakwera gave 1.2 million kwacha (around R22 000), while Chilima gave 1 million kwacha (around R18 400).

When contacted for a comment by the same publication that spoke to Nyondo,  Malawian presidential press secretary Brian Banda did not deny or confirm the country’s Presidium had paid part of the funeral expenses for Israella Bushiri. Banda said:

The president has no comment to make on any matters related to the death of a child. Out of respect for her grieving parents and their privacy, His Excellency has elected to not speak on the matter

Israella Bushiri died in a Kenyan hospital on Monday 29, March 2021. Her remains landed at Kamuzu International Airport on Wednesday. A memorial service to celebrate her life in Lilongwe, Malawi was held on the same day. Israella was buried on Thursday.

Bushiri and his family escaped South Africa in 2020 around the same time that Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera was in the country on a visit for talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa. This raised speculation that Chakwera or at least his delegation, had helped Bushiri and his wife escape.

Investigations by the South African government concluded that the Bushiris had not left the country aboard the flight on which Chakwera and his delegation travelled. Bushiri and his wife Mary are facing fraud and money laundering charges in South Africa.
