Gutu Says No Party Can Beat ZANU PF In A Free & Fair Election

Former MDC spokesperson, Obert Gutu, has said no party in Zimbabwe can beat the ruling ZANU PF in a free and fair election.

The former deputy minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs during the Government of National Unity (GNU) era said he has made his assessment.

Speaking during an interview with Alpha Media Holdings’ Heart and Soul TV (HStv), Gutu said:

I put my money on Zanu PF. There is no political party in this country that can beat Zanu PF in any free and fair election. I have done my studies, I have done my analysis and I have looked at the numbers.

Gutu recently joined the ruling party after some time without a party after his resignation from MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe where he was the Vice President of the party.

He speaks when the Southern African country is preparing for the 2023 elections with President Emmerson Mnangagwa intending to extend his rule to at least two terms.

His remarks come as the opposition MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa is since 2018 at loggerheads with ZANU PF and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) accusing the two of manipulating the presidential election in Mnangagwa’s favour.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has since its formation in 1999 claimed that the ruling party rigs elections and cannot win in a free and fair election.

The party uses incidents of violence as recorded in Zimbabwe’s 2008 elections which were widely condemned by the international community after the Robert Mugabe-led government deployed the country’s security apparatus to coerce the electorate to vote for its candidate in the run-off election.

The international community has been urging Zimbabwe to implement electoral reforms to ensure there is a level playfield.
