MDC Alliance Resolutions On Recalls, Chilonga Evictions

MDC Alliance’s National Standing Committee met on 24 March and discussed a number of issues including recent recalls of its members from Parliament and impending eviction of Chilonga people in Chiredzi.

Below is a statement that was issued by the party’s spokesperson, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere which states the resolutions of the meeting.

On the 24th of March 2021, the National Standing Committee of the MDC Alliance met in accordance with the party’s constitution. The Standing Committee received the reports of the President and the Secretary-General. The following matters were deliberated upon:

A. Governance and Human Rights Crisis

  1. Illegal Recalls: The National Standing Committee notes the continued abuse of institutions by ZANU PF including through the illegal recalls of duly elected representatives. There is a clear attempt by ZANU PF to supplant the main opposition and return Zimbabwe to one-party rule. Parliament has ceased to be a legitimate representation of the will of the people. It was the last pillar if representative politics but it has now become a theatre of toxic interference by the Executive. It is now extremely difficult to expect the laws that come from the people. We humbly note that Zimbabweans remain unshaken by these manoeuvres and can see them for what they are. The party conveys its gratitude to Zimbabweans for reposing their faith and trust in the party. The people’s leadership is aware that Zimbabweans have no confusion around who they voted for. The MDC Alliance is undoubtedly a political party recognised both by the Electoral Act and the Nomination Court that sat before the 2018 plebiscite. The Standing Committee thanks Zimbabweans for their massive support to the party in the 2018 elections even as elected leaders are now being recalled by ZANU PF and its surrogates.
  2. Widespread Consultation: The party leadership will soon go back to the people to tell them which of their elected representatives is still working for people’s interests and which ones are now pursuing turncoat politics and have been bought over by Zanu PF either directly or through its surrogates. The people will be consulted on the party’s next steps.
  3. Electoral Reform: The party through the Elections Department has written to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission requesting a meeting to discuss various issues among them the forthcoming by-elections, delimitation and the voters’ roll. We note the lifting of the unprocedural suspension of certain electoral activities. However, key stakeholders have not been consulted. There is an urgent need to implement systemic electoral reforms, the nature of which we have communicated to ZEC in detail. Our concerns await resolution.
  4. Forced Eviction of Chilonga Villagers: The Standing Committee celebrates the people of Chilonga who have stood up for their rights. The regime appears to be slowly backtracking from its brazen and inconsiderate displacement of innocent Zimbabweans from their ancestral land following pressure from the citizens. We will take all necessary steps to fight for their cause and protect the dignity, land rights, livelihoods, cultural practices and indigenous knowledge systems of the affected villagers. We call for a total reversal of the decision to carry out the forced eviction.

  1. Roll-out of #ZimbabweAgenda2021: The party has commenced the execution of #ZimbabweAgenda2021, the roll out of which has reached all provinces in the country. The party has started the implementation of party programs throughout all provinces in accordance with the party’s strategic plan.
  2. Energizing the Base: The meetng received feedback on the massive nationwide programme to energize the base in light of the well-received Agenda2021 recently delivered by the people’s President, Adv Nelson Chamisa whose theme is Citizens’ Convergence for Change. We re-affirm that the MDC Alliance is a people-centred and people-driven party. Our leaders are principled. Those who sell out will not deter the movement. The core is unmoved and the base is not shaken.
