Scottish Club Thanks ZIFA For Accepting David Moyo Situation

Warriors striker David Moyo’s Scottish Premiership club Hamilton Academical said they spoke at length about his call up for Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia later this month.

The club barred Moyo from travelling to Zimbabwe for the two matches because of severe travel restrictions in the United Kingdom.

In a statement on its official website, Hamilton Academical revealed they also spoke to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Had Moyo been allowed to travel to Zimbabwe, he would have required to quarantine upon his arrival back into London, at his own expense, for 11 days as both Botswana and Zimbabwe are on the UK’s red list.

As a result, the 26-year-old would have missed a further two Accies games also. The club said in the statement:

In the current period of severe travel restrictions, the evolving Covid situation and the need to quarantine on returning to the UK, David wishes to reiterate his commitment and desire to play for his national team, and was entirely accepting of the situation, but was nevertheless regretful, that he would be unable to join the Zimbabwe squad for these two matches in the next fortnight.

The club also thanks the ZIFA very much for their understanding of the situation, which is outwith all our hands at the current moment.

We wish Zimbabwe well for their qualifiers and express the hope that David will receive future call ups for his national team.

Moyo was part of The Warriors squad which played back to back matches against Algeria in November last year.

Zimbabwe is due to play Botswana away in Francistown on 25th March, and at home to Zambia in Harare on 29th March.
