Police Detectives Intercept Automatic Rifles Smugglers

Police have arrested two men for alleged illegal possession of six automatic rifles. The suspects were arrested in Mwenezi, a district in Masvingo Province.

The suspects were caught in a game park and the rifles were stashed in the back of a Mazda B1600 vehicle.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

The suspects were intercepted at Gonarezhou Game Park in a Mazda B1600 vehicle.

Investigations so far indicate that the firearms were destined for Mozambique via Sango Border Post and all the firearms had obliterated serial numbers.

The Mozambican government is currently battling an Islamic insurgence that has displaced thousands of people in the northern part of the country.

The country has a history of armed conflict as it plunged into a bloody and protracted civil war soon after independence from Portugal.
