MDC Alliance Expels Mwonzora Candidate Voting Mutare Councillors

The MDC Alliance has reportedly expelled 2 Mutare City councillors after they violated the party’s constitution and voted for a member of the MDC T instead of an MDC Alliance candidate in the mayoral elections conducted at the council, Zim Morning Post reports.

According to the publication, MDC Alliance investigations showed that Elizabeth Tsoro Ward 2 and Tsitsi Ziweya of Ward 3 in Sakubva high-density suburb voted for Farai Bhiza (MDC -T) who then defeated Simon Chabuka (MDC Alliance) by 2 votes to win the deputy mayor position replacing Kudakwashe Chisango who was recalled by Mwonzora in December.

Part of the MDC Alliance constitution that was used to expel Tsoro and Ziweya reads:

A member of the Party who forms another Party or Organisation which competes with the MDC-Alliance, joins or supports a Political Party other than the MDC-Alliance or participates in an election as an independent candidate gets automatic termination of membership in these circumstances.

When contacted for comment one of the expelled councillors Ziweya reportedly said the party should divorce itself from council business:

I was not expelled and I am a member of the MDC  A. The party must not take what happened in council chambers as indiscipline because we have to take council business separately from party business.

Meanwhile, former Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba was arrested and detained on fresh corruption charges.
