Burna Boy And Wizkid Win Grammy Awards
Nigerian Super Stars Burnaboy and Wizkid yesterday both won awards at the 2021 Grammys awards held in Los Angeles last night, BBC reports.
Burna Boy scooped the Best Global Music Album award while Wizkid won an award for Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.
According to the publication:
- The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, in this case, Beyonce and Wizkid and her Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy, video director and video producer,
- Burna Boy, real name Damini Ogulu, who was nominated for the same award last year , won the award for his Twice As Tall album.
- Burna Boy, 29, beat four others including the Malian band, Tinariwen and his album that subsequently won the award was described during nominations as “a masterclass in the vibe and hustle that have made Burna Boy an international musical force. [He] continues to torch limitations, seamlessly blending styles and genres and fearlessly fuelling the fire heating the melting pot of pop, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and more“
- While the video that saw Wizkid winning was also described as “a feast for the fashion-forward and a celebration of Black and brown female beauty everywhere“
Burna Boy won the hearts of Africans including Zimbabweans as he is known to speak against human rights violations marring the continent anytime there is a movement against such.
