COVID-19 Triggered Improvement Of Zimbabwe's Health System - Officials

An official in the Ministry of Health and Child Care has observed that Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 response improved the quality of the country’s healthcare system and people will benefit from it beyond the pandemic.

The official, Dr. Reginald Mhene who is Midlands provincial medical director said several infrastructure developments were done at hospitals as well as the recruitment of more health personnel.

Zimbabwe’s health sector has been on a downward trend for over two decades now and analysts blame political elites for the collapse of the once vibrant public health system.

Analysts argue that political elites neglected or looted resources meant to boost the local public health sector political elites neglected or looted resources meant to boost the local public health sector mainly because they have the means to get medication abroad.

The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, however, locked everyone within the confines of the Zimbabwean borders as other countries were not accepting foreigners.

Observers note that the situation forced political elites to improve the health system since they had no other option.

When COVID-19 was first reported in China, many thought many African countries were not going to cope considering that their health systems were as collapsed as Zimbabwe’s.

Speaking on progress made with regards to combating the novel virus, Dr. Mhene attributed the positives registered at the Gweru Provincial Hospital (GPH) to the outbreak of COVID-19. He said:

Though we still have some vacant posts, last year we managed to recruit more health personnel, this will improve our health delivery beyond the pandemic. For example, Gweru Provincial Hospital (GPH) has a lot of improvements done there.

GPH had rapid infrastructure improvements in recent years, equating and in some cases surpassing those found at central hospitals and now qualifies it to be graded as such.
