Ghana Receives Historic First Shipment Of COVAX Vaccines

Ghana has become the first country to receive coronavirus vaccines through the COVAX initiative.

The shipment of the first wave of COVID-19 vaccines to Ghana this Wednesday has been hailed by UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore as a historic moment that fulfils the organisation’s promise to avail vaccines to poor countries. Said Fore:

Today marks the historic moment for which we have been planning and working so hard.

With the first shipment of doses to Ghana, we can begin to make good on the promise of the COVAX Facility to ensure people from less wealthy countries are not left behind in the race for life-saving vaccines.

The COVAX Facility is a global collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), COVAX is the only global initiative that is working with governments and manufacturers to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are available worldwide to both higher-income and lower-income countries.

Zimbabwe submitted an expression of interest to benefit from COVID-19 vaccines when they become available, a senior government official said in December last year.

The chief coordinator, National Response to COVID-19, Agnes Mahomva said Zimbabwe is part of the COVAX group and is, therefore, eligible to receive financial assistance to get vaccines.
