Grace Mugabe, Chiwenga And Valerio Sibanda The Only 3 People On EU Sanctions - EU

The European Union(EU) last week reemphasized that only 3 individuals Grace Mugabe, Valerio Sibanda, and Constantino Chiwenga were on their sanctions list, VOA reports.

The EU was speaking on the renewal of sanctions on the army-controlled Zimbabwe Defense Industries (ZDI) when they explained that the assets belonging to the trio were frozen in the EU and they were restricted to travel to countries in the EU.

The EU’s spokesperson said:

The three individuals are Grace Mugabe; Constantine Chiwenga; Philip Valerio Sibanda; you can find more information in the Official Journal. The specific restrictive measures in question are travel restrictions and freezing of funds and economic resources.

Restrictive measures are laid down in Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) Council decisions. After Member States have reached political agreement on the way ahead, a proposal is made by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

This proposal is further examined and discussed by the relevant Council preparatory bodies and the decision is then adopted by the Council by unanimity. All restrictive measures in force are kept under constant review to ensure that they continue to contribute towards achieving their stated objectives

The EU spokesperson also said the organization is planning to dialogue with Zimbabwe over these sanctions and said:

The Political Dialogue with Zimbabwe was postponed last December, due to the COVID-19 situation, and is going to rescheduled at the earliest occasion, once the situation allows for it.

The government of Zimbabwe has over the last decade blamed the economic decline on the sanctions imposed on some individuals and some entities by the west reports that have been denied by the US, the UK, and the EU.
