President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged all Zimbabweans to be vaccinated saying he will be vaccinated also adding that the vaccine was safe and the country’s chance at fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
Zimbabwe procured the COVID-19 vaccine from a Chinese firm, Sinopharm, and is expecting more from Russia, the United Kingdom, and India. He said:
The vaccine is safe and an effective antidote against Covid19 and indeed part of our weaponry in fighting the virus. All of us including myself will get vaccinated, so should you, my dear Zimbabweans if we are protect ourselves and families.
Some members of the public are reluctant to take the vaccine which they say was not tested enough to see if it is safe for human beings.
Whilst the vaccination is voluntary, Zimbabwe seeks to achieve herd immunity or community immunity, which is when a large part of the population of an area is immune to a specific disease.
If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, such as a coronavirus, then it has nowhere to go.
