Zimbabwe’s 1st COVID-19 Vaccination On Thursday At Wilkins

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has announced that Zimbabwe’s first COVID-19 vaccination will be done at Wilkins Infectious Disease Hospital tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 am.

The Ministry also announced that frontline workers including health caregivers will be among the first people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine shots.

Zimbabwe took delivery of its first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday from a Chinese company, SinoPharm.

The Southern African country is also expecting the delivery of more batches from the Asian country, the Republic of Russia, and the United Kingdom.

The plan, according to authorities, is to achieve herd immunity which is defined as a stage when most of a population is immune to infectious diseases and can provide indirect protection to those who are not immune to the disease.

Authorities also note that most of the coronavirus cases in Zimbabwe are local transmissions therefore the current national lockdown is premised at containing the cases.

Meanwhile, some members of the public including children or young people under the age of 18, women who are presently pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to get pregnant in the next 6 weeks, and anyone with allergies to COVID-19 vaccines or other vaccines in the past will not be given the vaccine.

The government said the vaccine will be voluntarily taken.
