MPs Are Frontline Workers - Chiwenga

The Minister of Health and Child Care Constantino Chiwenga today in parliament said members of parliament are frontline workers which might mean they will also be prioritized when it comes to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Chiwenga was updating the legislators about the vaccine that was delivered yesterday and thanking different contributors according to the Parliament of Zimbabwe which said:

The Minister says that MPs are considered as front line workers as they directly deal with the people. He has stated that there are more frontline workers who have not been mentioned here. He has emphasised that there is need for accountability for all vaccinations.

However, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has given the rollout plan to start on Thursday and in the first 2 phases MPs do not appear:

  • Health workers
  • Health personnel in the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Defence Forces, and the Prisons and Correctional Services.
  • ZIMRA personnel – Immigration and Agritex workers
  • Persons who are over 60 years and other vulnerable groups

Phase 2:

  • Phase 2 will encompass college and university lecturers and school teachers, while the rest of the population at low risk will be catered for under Phase 3.

A ministry of health official said the effectiveness of the vaccine will be measured as they will be administering it, Meanwhile, those over 60 and those with chronic conditions are not supposed to take the vaccine.
