'The Movement Has Only Just Begun', Trump Speaks After Acquittal

Former United States of America President Donald Trump was on Saturday acquitted by the Senate in his second impeachment trial for his alleged role of inciting a riot at the Capitol on 6 January 2021 which sent legislators scampering for safety.

Trump is the only United States president to be impeached twice but on both occasions, he escaped conviction.

The former president’s second impeachment trial came to a climactic end on Saturday afternoon after a majority of senators voted in favour of his conviction but failed to reach the required 67 votes threshold.

In a statement following his acquittal, Trump castigated his trial as yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of the United States of America. The statement said:

This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country.

No president has ever gone through anything like it, and it continues because our opponents cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago.

Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.

In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people.

There has never been anything like it!
