"The Lockdown Must Go Now" - MPs

The chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health Ruth Labode has said the national lockdown must go now to save the ailing economy.

The call is made ahead of President Mnangagwa’s scheduled review of the lockdown regulations next week as current measures are set to expire on Monday.

Labode urged the government to downgrade the country’s Covid-19 rating from Level 4 to a less severe Level 1 restriction. Labode said:

Based on the current trend of the new cases spiralling downward, I would expect the government to remove the lockdown. The vaccine is almost here, the new cases are down so the lockdown must go now.

We still need some quarantine centres for those who dare to border jump, produce fake Covid-19 certificates and for clinically ill individuals. Quarantine centres can now be reduced by 80%.

The call also comes after President Mnangagwa has already hinted that life in Zimbabwe will only return to normality after the majority of citizens has been vaccinated.

Meanwhile, government reports suggest a donation of 200 000 doses and an additional 600 000 doses purchased are expected by Monday February 15 and the first week respectively.

Russia also pledged to donate COVID-19 vaccination to the Southern African country.

The government has also announced that frontline workers, the elderly, citizens with underlying conditions will be the people to be prioritised in the inoculation programme.
