General Light Rain Expected Countrywide - MSD

The Meteorology Department has given the following weather update which stated that light rain to be expected in many parts of the country tomorrow 14 February 2021. Said the MSD in the update:

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 2021 VALID UNTIL MONDAY 15 FEBRUARY 2021.

Isolated thunderstorms and rain occurred yesterday to the northern and southern parts of the country with varying amounts. The notable rainfall amounts recorded were over Karoi (32mm) and Chipinge (22mm).

FORECAST FOR TOMORROW SUNDAY 14 FEBRUARY 2021:

It should be cloudy and warm in Matabeleland North, Bulawayo Metropolitan, northern areas of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, all Mashonaland, and northern areas of Manicaland Provinces with scattered thunderstorms. The remainder of the country (Matabeleland South, southern areas of Midlands, Masvingo as well southern areas of Manicaland) is expected to be partly cloudy and warm with a chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

ACTIONS TO TAKE: 

  • There is a heightened risk for lightning strikes.
  • Destructive winds are to be expected in a number of areas
  • Flooded rivers remain a potential hazard: even if it has not rained heavily in the area. heavy rains may have occurred upstream. Flash flooding may occur especially in wetlands and near river plains
  • The stormy morning skies may allow a few outdoor activities such as weeding. applying fertilizers or even hanging laundry. but remember: when thunder roars it is best to be indoors!
  • Try to avoid isolated sheds trees and even the kitchen area especially in rural settings. These are usually prone to lightning strikes. Stay Weather-Ready and Environment-Safe.
  • Ensure rooftops are strongly secured and intact as the potential of wind gust is high.
  • Avoid crossing flooded rivers and swollen streams whether on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Keep away from metal equipment and pipes. as these are prone to lightning strikes.
  • Do not ride at the back of an open truck or drive a tractor during a storm.
  • Avoid driving when visibility is poor, more so at night and during heavy rains.
