Armyworms Invades Mberengwa

The infamous armyworms have reportedly invaded the Midlands district of Mberengwa threatening the region’s bumper harvest as it is destroying maize crops, NewZimbabwe reports.

A farmer that spoke to the publication said:

Last week Thursday, I went to my plot to tender my maize crop, but I was surprised to find the crop infested by the pest

After discovering the worms, I consulted the local agricultural extension officer who advised me to buy pesticide.

Unfortunately, I could not buy the pesticide because I do not have the money to buy the chemicals

Another farmer highlighted another problem apart from the armyworms, the lack of transport to go and buy pesticides in Zvishavane or Gwanda due to the ongoing lockdown:

Some people are saying I should try Dimethoate, but the problem is that it very expensive.

My son who is based Canada last week sent me some money to buy pesticide, but the challenge is that I cannot access that money because police at roadblocks are demanding clearance letters.

My anticipated yield this year is going to be reduced by these worms.

According to the Agriculture Department of the Australian government:

Armyworms are caterpillar pests of grass pastures and cereal crops. They are the only caterpillars that growers are likely to encounter in cereal crops, although occasionally native budworm will also attack grain when underlying weed hosts dry out.
