Two Men Swept Away While Rescuing Drowning Cow

Two villagers from Makhakavhule area in Beitbridge drowned when their inflatable boat capsized in uMzingwane River on Saturday morning.

They were part of a group of four men who entered the water in an attempt to rescue a cow that was marooned. Two of the men swam to safety.

The area in which the incident occurred is located 25 km west of Beitbridge town. An eyewitness, Wellington Mudyawabikwa, said:

Searches are now underway. The river started swelling midweek covering the bridge which links us with the town.

The two men were part of four people who wanted to rescue a cow from the river when the boat overturned two metres into the waters.

uMzingwane River is downstream of the overflowing Zhovhe Dam which supplies Beitbridge town with water.

Zhovhe Dam started overflowing last month and the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) in Beitbridge warned communities living downstream of the dam to be wary of possible flooding.
