Month-on-month Inflation Gains 0.01pc

The month on month inflation rate for January 2021 was 2.76 per cent, while the Blended Consumer Price Index stood at 110.52, official statistics show.

According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat), the inflation rate for January increased by 0.01 percentage points to 2.76 on the December 2020 rate of 2.75%. Zimstat said in a statement:

The month on month inflation rate in January 2021 was 2.76% gaining 0.01 percentage points on the December 2020 rate of 2.75%.

The year on year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of Jan 2021 as measured by the all items blended Consumer Price Index stood at 191.52%.

The blended CPI for the month ending Jan 2021 stood at 110.52 compared to 107.55 in Dec 2020 and 37.91 in Jan 2020.

The blended inflation entails a combination of inflation for prices that are quoted in US dollars and inflation for prices quoted in Zimbabwe dollars.

On Monday Zimstat it had upgraded its systems to allow for up to date production of inflation data. The statistics body said:

Zimstat would like to inform users that from January 21, the Consumer Price Index will the disseminated in the same month of data collection.

This has been made possible by the adoption of computerisation in data collection and processing. Prior to this, data collection was paper-based. As a result, Zimstat was publishing inflation figures 30 days after data collection.
