Zimbabwe Records 70 COVID-19 Deaths In 24 Hours

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has reported that 70 people succumbed to COVID-19 on the 25th of January 2021 pushing the death toll to 1075.

Coronavirus cases and deaths have been on an upward trend since the end of last year’s fourth quarter with authorities attributing the surge to complacency and the emergency of a new and aggressive coronavirus variant first detected in South Africa.

Zimbabwe reopened its land borders to travellers in December and that is when the new strain is believed to have entered the country.

In its daily situation report on 25 January, the MoHCC said Harare recorded the highest number of deaths as indicated below.

  • Harare – 48 (20 deaths were reported retrospectively, the remaining 28 cover Friday to Sunday 24 January 2021)
  • Manicaland – 9
  • Bulawayo – 6
  • Midlands – 3
  • Mashonaland East – 2
  • Mashonaland Central – 1
  • Masvingo – 1

Meanwhile, 326 new cases were recorded on 25 January with Mashonaland West recording the highest number of the cases.
