Liverpool Suffer 1st Home Defeat Since 2017

English Premier League reigning champions, Liverpool, last night lost 1-0 to struggling Burnley, the first home defeat the Reds have registered since 2017.

Barnes was tripped in the box by goalkeeper Alisson with seven minutes remaining and converted the spot-kick as Burnley won at Anfield for the first time since 1974.

Perhaps what is most surprising is how unsurprising it felt by the time of Ashley Barnes’ winning penalty.

Jurgen Klopp made some unexpected changes to the team that played in the 0-0 draw against log leaders Manchester United.

The starting line-up was without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino whom the German international replaced with Shaqiri and Origi. They were introduced later.

Burnley repelled, fought, blocked and attacked their way to victory, taking advantage with the 82nd-minute sucker punch after Alisson’s mistimed dive on the matchwinner.

Liverpool who are winless in five in the league, though they stay fourth for now, are in danger of dropping out of the Champions League spots.

Burnley rise to 16th, seven points above the relegation zone.
