JUST IN: DJs Fantan, Levelz & Dammer Granted Bail

Harare High Court Justice Davison Foroma this Thursday granted Z$10,000 bail each to New Year’s Eve Mbare party organisers DJ Fantan, Levelz and Dammer.

This comes after the trio had chosen to appeal against the harsh sentence they received from a magistrate earlier this month.

DJ Fantan, Levels and Boss Dammer had pleaded guilty to hosting a New Year’s Eve bash despite government admonishing the wider public to observe social distancing.

The event was attended by thousands of people triggering public outrage after pictures and videos appeared on social media.

After days of playing hide and seek with the police, the trio was finally arrested and charged with violating COVID-19 regulations.

Arnold “Fantan” Kamudyariwa, DJ Levez (real name Tafadzwa Kadzimwe) and promoter Dammer, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months prison sentence before the magistrate conditionally suspended six months.

Their detention attracted a public outcry with some saying the government was showing double standards after some political and business elites including Senator Monica Mutsvangwa and Kuda Tagwirei who had organised similar events were not even arrested.

Some, however, said the trio’s actions had put several lives in danger, therefore, they had to be made examples of what happens when one breaks the law.

The gig was an expose of great complacency in the country which authorities say triggered the coronavirus resurgence.

Health officials say health institutions and officials in the country are now overwhelmed by the surge in COVID-19 cases.
