Chiwenga: Hospitals Aren't Overwhelmed By COVID-19
Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who doubles as the Minister of Health and Child Care has dismissed as mere exaggeration reports which suggest that local health institutions are overwhelmed by COVID-19.
His remarks follow reports which suggest that “dead bodies were everywhere” at some health institutions including Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The remarks re also a departure from those made by the Secretary of Information, Nick Mangwana who had earlier this year insinuated that local hospitals were overwhelmed.
In his daily COVID-19 update to the nation, Chiwenga said Zimbabwe was still above the situation although cases have spiked recently. He said:
It would be, however, an exaggeration at this stage, to suggest that our Health institutions are overwhelmed by cases of COVID 19. Admittedly, the recent escalation of cases of the pandemic in the country caused a high demand for health care.

Nonetheless, let me reassure citizens that Zimbabwe’s public and private health institutions still have adequate capacity to offer health services to all patients.
It is also well-documented that among the Active Cases recorded so far:
- Two (02) to three (03) percent warranted hospitalization with specialized treatment,
- At least twelve (12) to thirteen (13) percent required discharge within two (02) to three (3) days of admission,
- While the bulk of Eighty-Five (85) percent only required self-isolation.
Some administrative issues that posed a gridlock in the smooth admission of COVID 19 patients in our hospitals have since been resolved. Among them was, Government’s extension of COVID 19 Allowances to incentivize our Health care workers, frontline workers, civil servants and vulnerable members of our society, and provision of PPEs.
Zimbabwe is experiencing a resurgence of the pandemic and 636 people have lost their lives from the 25 368 confirmed cases since March last year.
Meanwhile, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Chitungwiza Health Department have been forced to scale down their operations after some of their staff members died of or contracted COVID-19.
