Mahere's Lawyers Demand Identity Of 'Dead' Child's Mother
Lawyers representing MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere on charges of communicating falsehoods through social media on Tuesday told a Harare magistrate that they would want to know the identity of the woman who alleged that a police officer had killed her baby in a video that went viral on social media.
Mahere appeared before magistrate Trynos Wutawashe on allegations of posting false information on Twitter that the police officer in the video had killed a nine-month-old baby.
Freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and MDC Alliance deputy chairperson Job Sikhala have already appeared in court on similar charges emanating from the same video.
After the video went viral, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) issued a statement dismissing social media reports that the woman’s child had been killed by the police officer.
The ZRP however did not reveal the woman’s identity or the police officer involved in the fracas.
