MDC-T Members Compiling Evidence Against Mwonzora

Some members of the opposition MDC-T are reportedly planning to drag their leader, Douglas Mwonzora to court over alleged manipulation of the election process at the just-ended Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress.

Mwonzora had a landslide victory beating rivals, Thokozani Khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi to the Presidency, at the shambolic congress.

NewsDay reports that leaked conversations from a WhatsApp group, Defending Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy (DMTL), an MDC-T pressure group, suggest that party members are plotting to drag Mwonzora to court.

DMTL information secretary, Warship Dumba who is also a former Harare councillor, said Mwonzora grabbed power using violence and should be challenged in court. He said:

They (Mwonzora and MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa) both grabbed power using violence and chicanery. Both are guilty of the same offence.

In the meantime, we are busy compiling evidence that we would like to take to court for litigation. We cannot say principle is below the party because lack of democratic principles by Zanu PF led to the formation of the MDC. If we accept rigged elections within our party, saying the party must move on then we have no moral standing to slam Zanu PF for rigging elections.

Dumba also claimed that Mwonzora abused party funds when he was still the Secretary-General and is poised to do worse now considering that he is the party’s summit.

He added that they had since initiated the litigation process challenging “that shameful event where non-members of the party were bussed and brought in to vote as delegates of 2014.”

Other candidates have since accepted defeat, albeit acknowledging the congress was by any measure shambolic, saying the unity of the party was more important than anything else.
