South African Borders To Stay Open During Lockdown Level 3

The South African Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi yesterday addressed a media briefing and outlined the measures the South African Home Affairs is taking after their country went back to lockdown level 3 this week Times Live reports.

Motsoaledi said everyone coming into South Africa must have a valid COVID-19 free certificate. The department will also deploy 160 official to the following 6 borders which are considered the busiest borders in the country:

  1. Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe;
  2. Lebombo with Mozambique;
  3. Oshoek with the kingdom of Eswatini;
  4. Maseru Bridge with Lesotho;
  5. Ficksburg with Lesotho; and
  6. Kopfontein with Botswana.

According to the publication, Motsoaledi said 60 border officials will help the South African National Defense Forces (SANDF) to identify high-risk areas used by people to illegally cross into South Africa:

The immigration officers and the soldiers are not there to stop people from coming into South Africa. They are there to insist that anybody wishing to visit South Africa must use the official gates of entry and produce all the requisite documentation, otherwise they won’t be allowed in.

The South African government will also deploy more health officials to various ports of entry to ensure that people with valid COVID-19 tests are allowed entry into South Africa.

Only truck drivers are exempted from these test requirements, as was the case at the beginning of the lockdown. Any other traveller is warned once more that they will never be allowed in the country without producing authentic tests,

The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) will enlist private laboratories to provide additional support for testing. The South African Military Health Service has been requested to provide 73 additional military health personnel to help in the testing.

COVID-19 cases in South Africa have breached the 1 Million mark as the country reeks from the virus’ second wave.
