Mwonzora Assigns Khupe, Mudzuri, Komichi To New Roles

Newly elected MDC-T president, Senator Douglas Mwonzora has assigned his rivals, Thokozani Khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi, new roles in the party.

This comes after Mwonzora had resoundingly won the chaotic extraordinary congress held on Sunday at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Mwonzora’s rivals were rejecting his victory saying he manipulated the voting process. Khupe maintained that she was still in charge of the party.

Khupe who has been the interim leader since March when the Supreme Court ordered the party to hold the congress to elect the substantive heir to its funding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai also claimed that she had suspended Mwonzora and had declared the congress null and void.

However, at a press conference held in Harare this Wednesday, Mwonzora said he had assigned his rivals to new roles in the party.

The trio retained its 2014 positions. According to Mwonzora, reverted to the First Vice President post, Mudzuri was also given the VP post while Komichi retains his post as national chairperson.

The presser was also attended by other party bigwigs who include Dr Tapiwa Mashakada who was appointed national treasurer general while Paurina Mpariwa took over from Mr Mwonzora as secretary-general.

Addressing journalists, Mr Mwonzora said the just-ended extraordinary congress held at the weekend was in substantial compliance with the Supreme Court ruling directing that the party convene an extraordinary congress to replace the party’s founding president, Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.

Meanwhile, law expert, Professor Lovemore Madhuku has said the moment Khupe cast her vote, she relinquished her powers as the acting president and became a mere candidate, therefore, she could not have cancelled the congress.

There has been a leadership crisis in the MDC since the demise of Morgan Tsvangirai in 2018 and fears abound that the opposition will not stabilise in time for the 2023 elections.
