Zimbabwe, South Africa 'In Contact' Over Beitbridge Chaos

The Governments of Zimbabwe and South Africa have started engaging each other to resolve the traffic gridlock at Beitbridge Border Post where travellers are spending several days to cross into Zimbabwe, an official has said.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi said the two countries have agreed to partially relax COVID-19 curfew regulations to clear north-bound traffic on the border. Sunday News quoted Hamadziripi as having said:

The two Governments are in contact with a view to finding a sustainable solution to the delays currently being experienced by travellers at Beitbridge Border Post.

It is our expectation that the results of these efforts will be discernible very soon.

Meanwhile, prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono the long queues at the Beitbridge Border Post are testimony to the fact that Zimbabwe’s economy is not working as it should. He wrote on Facebook:

IF Zimbabwe’s economy was working as it should, there wouldn’t be these huge queues because Zimbabweans in South Africa would be living and working in Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe would not be importing everything down to toothpicks, hence these long truck queues.

… All these problems are authored by the looting of public funds, the plunder of the nation’s natural resources and the grand incompetence in Mnangagwa’s regime!
